Investment banking analysts are usually hired straight out of college on a two-year program that sometimes extends into a third year.

For most first-year investment banking analysts, the average “all-in” amount is between $170,000 and $190,000.

The following table summarizes the average compensation of a 1st, 2nd and increasingly rare analyst.

Traditionally, investment banking analysts receive their first year bonus 12 months after arrival and do not progress to calendar year bonuses until they are promoted to associate (“from”).

However, companies are increasingly moving to an “annual stub” model so that IB analysts reset their bonuses at the end of the calendar year in December. In this case, analysts receive a “small” bonus at the end of their first calendar year (typically $30,000-$35,000 just 5 months after joining) and the next bonus 12 months later.

As in the US, there is a standard base: in London, almost all firms currently offer a base of £60,000, rising to £65,000 and £70,000 for second and third year analysts respectively.

The salary is comparable to London after adjusting GBP to EUR in smaller financial centers in Europe such as Switzerland, Frankfurt and Zurich.

Top performers get 100% of their base as a bonus (and in some rare cases even 105% of their base), while weaker analysts at most companies will receive 70% of their base salary.

At many firms, being ranked at the bottom of the pack is also a not-so-subtle indicator that you won’t be promoted to associate.

How analysts rank relative to others in a group, as opposed to how they rank relative to other groups or within other firms, is therefore the most important indicator of career prospects within a firm.

Investment banks organize their groups primarily around industries (“hedging”) and compete with other firms based on the number of deals they’ve done within each sector.

If the analyst is in an industry group that has done a lot of business and brought a lot of income to the bank, the bonus fund for that group will be larger than for less successful groups.

At the end of each year, investment banks allocate a certain % of the revenue generated by the company to employee benefits.

Wells Fargo Is Hiring. Will Brokers Sign On?

Not all investment banks are created equal: a select few, known as large firms, engage in multibillion-dollar businesses and exist within a giant global financial institution (eg Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan).

Others, called elite boutiques, work on similarly large deals but focus exclusively on M&A investment banking advice (eg, Evercore, Lazard, and Guggenheim).

Finally, others focus on the middle market. Although you can break it down in different ways, compensation is generally pretty well defined at the most “elite” companies:

As banks increasingly struggle to retain analysts who decide to go into private equity (despite a more relaxed dress code), fewer analysts are staying in their second year, let alone their third.

Johnson Associates, a compensation consultancy, expects year-end incentives (i.e. bonuses) to rise to the highest level since the Great Recession of 2008 as the financial services industry benefits from a strong upturn in business volume .

In 2021, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan are preparing to pay bigger bonuses to their investment bankers, and virtually all investment banks will follow suit.

For example, Goldman Sachs will raise the base salaries of its entry-level investment banking analysts from $85,000 to $110,000.

That’s why major banks are focusing on building a pay-for-performance culture in addition to increasing base pay.

Wells Fargo’s brokerage ranks continue to shrink, suggesting the long-term decline in the number of advisers is far from over.

Customer Behavior And Loyalty In Banking: Global Edition 2023

The total number of advisers, 14,226, was down 173 from the previous quarter and 301 fewer than the same period last year, the bank said in its second quarter results announcement.

At the same time, net income from wealth management fell 37% year over year to $445 million as costs rose and non-interest income fell, the company said.

Fifty-six financial advisers retired in the second quarter, a spokeswoman said. A total of 259 consultants retired from June 2017 to June 2018.

“The key for us is to make the right transition, which David Kowach is doing, and continue to have the right bonus and AF structure and have things like Intuitive Investor [the company’s robo-advisor] to keep the new investor going. have options beyond the traditional FA model,” he said, referring to the chairman of Wells Fargo Advisors.

Governance Lessons From Wells Fargo

According to research firm Cerulli Associates, advisors 55 and older manage about 37% of assets and make up 39% of advisor leaders.

However, Wells Fargo posted steeper declines than other major brokerages, according to earnings reports. The bank reported that it had 860 fewer advisers in the second quarter of this year than at the end of the third quarter of 2016, when Wells Fargo was first hit by scandals on the consumer banking side.

From the third quarter of 2016 to the first quarter of this year, the number of advisers at Morgan Stanley fell by 174 advisers to 15,682, while the number of brokers at Merrill Lynch fell by 125 to 14,829.

Wells Fargo is the first news outlet to report earnings. Merrill Lynch’s parent company, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley are expected to report earnings next week.

Wells Fargo Misses A Chance To Show Off

Wells Fargo’s adviser departures first surfaced in late 2016 following revelations that Wells Fargo’s consumer banking arm engaged in questionable sales practices, including opening millions of accounts without customer approval. That and other scandals led to increased regulatory scrutiny, fines of more than $185 million and the departure of former Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf.

Louis Diamond, a recruiter with Diamond Consultants who worked with Wells Fargo, predicts the number of advisers leaving will slow.

“Obviously the data tells a different story, but I think a lot of the people who were negatively affected by the banking scandals … are gone,” Diamond says.

Danny Sarch, president of recruiting firm Leitner Sarch Consultants, argues that more departures are to come, noting that a career change for most runners can take months of planning.

“I can tell you that major producers are interviewing and planning to leave, so I don’t see any change in the trend,” adds Sarch.

At least 130 advisers overseeing nearly $16 billion in client assets have left Wells Fargo to join competitors this year, according to FINRA BrokerCheck records and employment data compiled by On Wall Street.

To help rebuild the bank’s image and address customer concerns, Wells Fargo launched a campaign to improve compliance and other functions under Sloan, who took over after Stumpf’s resignation.

And unlike its Wirehouse competitors, Wells Fargo continues to actively hire advisors from other firms. In addition, Wells Fargo remains in the brokerage protocol, while UBS and Morgan Stanley withdrew the agreement in late 2017.

In addition to recent platform and tool updates, Wells Fargo has also focused on its cultural appeal, Heather Hunt-Ruddy, head of client experience and growth at Wells Fargo Advisors, said in an emailed statement.

“When we think about how we retain our advisors, it’s about culture and how we enable our AFs to be successful. Most of our managers have worked in the field branch system as advisors or financial managers and we understand the nature and demands of the business because we’ve all been on our own. As leaders, we’re accessible to our advisors, and they really care about the FA experience as much as we do about our customers. Our culture is the result of our history of bringing smaller companies together, and we “work hard to maintain that sense of connection even as we grow up,” he said.

For example, non-interest expense increased 9% year-over-year to $3.361 billion, primarily due to higher regulatory, risk and technology costs. This was partially offset by seasonally lower personnel costs and lower brokerage fees, Wells Fargo said.

Retail brokerage client assets rose 3% year over year to $1.6 trillion. The company said it was flat quarter over quarter.
