After checking DECA Direct for advice, I found that there were no major documents full of tips, so I decided to write my own book. This guide will describe the process and framework I’ve used over the past year on my DECA Glass journey.
Hello! Before we begin, I think you should know a little bit about me. My name is Andrew Weatherman. I have written this article to help members in the arduous journey of competing in writing events. At ICDC 2017 in Anaheim, California, I placed No. 2 in the International Business Plan category.

For 2018-2019, DECA has updated the written general event guidelines, and with those updates, some major changes will be implemented.
Information about the end of marketing representation events and the implementation of integrated marketing campaign programs will be discussed.
The double spacing requirement for “main content” has been removed. And as a result the page length of the written event is corrected.
First of all, if you are reading this in preparation for Atlanta, congratulations on making it to ICDC! Qualifying for ICDC is not an easy task, so you should be proud of your achievements. If you’re interested in the Atlanta competition, keep reading these tips (and instructions if you haven’t!) As ICDC approaches, I’ve received a few questions about how to present and present your paper. Here is a collection of my top tips for ICDC!
Competitive Events — Indiana Deca
As with the rest of this guide, feel free to take my advice as a guide. I don’t know your project, I don’t know the strength of your presentation; I don’t know what works for you and/or your team. I was just behind the computer. You do, but these are my suggestions.
If you don’t know, you can edit your CDC paper before submitting your ICDC paper. (You should take your paper to ICDC and present it at the conference.) However
Randomly gives the green light to edit your paper. If you get a perfect score on your executive summary and you believe the score isn’t by fluke, why are you editing your paper?! (This may sound common, but you might be surprised at the number of people who do this.) However, if you get a bad grade in finance, I recommend editing. Also, I suggest proofreading your paper and correcting any grammatical errors that hinder comprehension and flow and double checking for penalty points.
Overall, if you get a good score (read: perfect score or almost perfect) mark the section, don’t edit it before ICDC! If you make too many changes to an article, the paper will read incorrectly and lose its power. Likewise, the quality of an over-edited DECA paper is inversely related to the number of indeterminate edits.

A quick walk through the living room at ICDC will reveal a colorful, high-tech display (as should the competition, which includes multiple iPads.) Some may find this intimidating. Personally, I was rocking a PowerPoint and a clicker, so I was scared out of my mind that these ornate light panels would embarrass me. If you are working with one of these councils, well and good! You have the best opportunity to impress your judges with a solid pitch and great aesthetics that will make you hard to forget. If you’re like me and roll with PowerPoint simply and effortlessly, get ready to have the best day of your life.
Side note: Hybrids of the two methods I discuss are available and likely to be used by many. Instead of thinking of this as an explanation of extremism, consider this point with an outline mindset for how to achieve perfection in your mix.
Basically, a fancy board takes away from your speech. If you are not a great public speaker but a great designer, go for an expensive board! Although judges may lose their focus, your effective board will provide them with all the information they need to supplement their “selection hearing” while keeping them interested. Then go for a traditional PowerPoint presentation. Although this option may be a little difficult, you can be sure that your speaking skills will leave a lasting impression on the judge’s mind about your flawless project.
Okay, so 2017 was the first year I competed with the writing program at ICDC and no one told me you had to get your ID. When you go to open your paper. (S/O to Dylan Heneghan for running to the hotel for me to get it.) So be careful, you have to bring your photo ID with you when you go to file your paperwork at ICDC or you have to go back to your hotel. Hold it. Your ID and wait in a long line – again.
I’ll be honest: I have no idea how competition works at ICDC. In North Carolina – and many associations – the CDC, we don’t have an initial round. However, at ICDC, these rounds exist and there are two steps that separate you from the desired DECA mirror.
Business Development — City Of Rogers, Mn
Round During this round you will compete with 19 projects (offer or accept depending on your event). To qualify for the preliminary round and be recognized as an international finalist (blue ribbon medal), you must have one of the top two scores from your team. At each event, there are approximately 160 participants. Again, depending on your event, 16-20 projects go to the finals. International finalists will be announced during the Achievement Awards (which is the morning of the Grand Prix).
Along with business and voting, make sure you have someone on the phone who can fill in and vote for you (or your association handles this). Also, it is likely that your competition time will be longer,
At the end of the achievement award session. If your event is the last to be announced, I recommend skipping the photo-op and running to check your competition time: photos can wait. You don’t want to miss your presentation and you might want to run to your place one last time.
