The COVID 19 Stimulus Fund, established by the 3 organizations, will invest approximately US$2,500-5,000 (GHC 15,000-30,000 in local currency) in women-led small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The total size of the fund has not yet been determined. The fund will coordinate incentives with its beneficiaries. “It is largely a share-based model. We will provide SMEs with seed funding and based on the profits they make, we will take a percentage to redirect the funds to be reinvested to support other SMEs,” Annan explained. They particularly seek to invest in companies that emphasize sustainability in their decision-making process and that have a positive impact on the Ghanaian economy. The most competitive applicants will also be able to explain how COVID-19 has affected their business operations and how they plan to overcome or mitigate associated risks.

In Ghana, $5,000 can be a significant investment in an SME, but for growth-oriented companies, it is unlikely to be their last infusion of external capital. For the fund, “success is seeing the majority of our women-led businesses grow their business by mobilizing external funding and capital” along the line. In addition to capital, the fund will offer structure, branding tools and digitization and expansion support to increase the chances of success.
